What Is A Memorial Diamond?

When my great grandfather passed, I found myself searching for something more permanent than a photograph. I wanted a way to hold onto his presence. This personal search is what led to Amoriale, but it leads many families to ask a fundamental question: Is it really possible to turn ashes into a genuine diamond?

The short answer is yes. By replicating the earth's natural conditions, we can transform the carbon from cremation ashes or hair into a certified diamond. Below, we explain the specific science, the data, and the process behind this transformation.

What Exactly Is A Memorial Diamond?

A memorial diamond is not a simulant, cubic zirconia, or glass. It is a diamond, chemically, physically, and optically identical to those mined from the earth. The only difference is the origin of the carbon.

  • Source Material: Instead of carbon mined from the earth's mantle, we use carbon extracted from cremated remains (ashes) or keratin (hair/fur).
  • Hardness: It ranks 10 on the Mohs scale, the hardest substance known to man.
  • Certification: They are graded and certified by leading institutions like the IGI (International Gemological Institute).

The Science: CVD vs HPHT

The transformation from ashes to gem requires extreme precision. While most memorial diamond companies rely on older HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) methods, Amoriale specializes in CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) technology.

Step 1: Carbon Isolation
Cremated ashes contain many elements. We must isolate the carbon. Using a chemical refinement process, we aim to achieve a purity level of up to 99.99% carbon.

Step 2: The CVD Growth Advantage
In our process, a hydrocarbon gas mixture is introduced into a vacuum chamber. The gas is broken down into carbon plasma, which settles layer by layer onto a diamond seed crystal.

This allows us to grow Type IIa diamonds. This is the rarest classification of diamond. Less than 2% of mined diamonds belong to this category. They are defined by a lack of nitrogen and atomic perfection. While HPHT crushes carbon into a diamond, our CVD process allows the diamond to crystallize with atomic perfection.

Can You Use Hair Instead of Ashes?

Yes. We require about ½ cup of ashes to isolate enough carbon. However, many families, especially those grieving a pet or a loved one who was buried, do not have ashes. In these cases, we extract carbon from hair.

This was the case for a recent client who lost her Golden Retriever, Max. She did not have his ashes, but she had a lock of his golden fur. Because hair is rich in keratin (which contains carbon), we were able to grow a radiant-cut diamond directly from that sample.

Whether using ashes or hair, the result is identical: a Type IIa diamond. It is chemically pure and visually brilliant.
